Some especially weaker dimensioned roofs need solutions, which have a reduced weight than roofs made of tiles or slate. For these cases as well as for matters of design and shape roofing materials like metal or asphalt shingles can be used as roof covering. Another fact is the lower necessary roof pitch, which often is below the classic deck materials.

Similar to slate both materials are fixed to a boarding fixed on the rafters. Additionally there are solutions that come out with a lathing.

Metal

By using metal as roofing materials, sheets made of zinc, copper or aluminium protect the roof from water. It can be differed in roofing with small plates (E.g. Prefa) and large format coverings. For these larger sheets the most important types are the standing-seam roofing and the covering with trapezoidal profiled sheets.

Asphalt Shingles

The country of origin of the asphalt shingles is North America, where this material has proven itself under all climatic conditions. In Germany the first roofs made with asphalt shingles were accomplished around 1955, and it could reach a significant market share till now. While the color of the shingles previously was dominated by grey or sometimes black, today many colors and forms exist.
